‘Austin Griffiths’ is the classic large manzanita. This reliable and disease resistant cultivar showcases twisting branches with shiny mahogany bark that peels each year in summer. Profuse clusters of pink bellshaped flowers that contrast against the sage-colored evergreen leaves appear in late December and last through February. Thought to be a cross between A. manzanita ‘Sentinel’ and A. densiflora ‘Dr. Hurd’, this chance hybrid was found in the demonstration gardens at Native Sons Nursery in Arroyo Grande, CA.
