Called natsu-tsubaki, or summer camellia, in Japan, the Japanese stewartia wows in every season. July brings 2-3” white flowers, whose tissue paper-like petals cup golden centers fringed with orange anthers. However, weeks of continuous bloom from this stunning floral display cannot rival the tree’s spectacular multicolor exfoliating bark, which peels off in plates to reveal shades of silver, orange, and red-brown. Branching that tends to begin low on the trunk contributes to its elegant pyramidal form, and fall color is a flaming burgundy-red. This understory tree prefers light shade in hot and humid areas and requires well-draining, acidic soil with ample moisture.
