Thuja plicata
'Cuprea'
A dwarf form of the western red cedar. A lovely plant with nodding, deep green needles tipped with light yellow, turning a creamy or copper-yellow color in winter. To maintain a globose form, prune out the occasionally over-vigorous shoots. Adaptable to partial shade. 3-4" per year. 2-3 ft. Yellow Globose Full sun. -20 to -10 F
Thuja plicata 'Whipcord' The unusual foliage on this low, mop-head-like plant consists of long, thick, glossy tendrils that suggest Independence Day fireworks. Unlike the species, which is a giant forest tree, the many branches seem to explode upward and send sparks cascading in all directions. Green in summer, the foliage changes to bronze in winter, matching the richly colored wood. Every garden can accommodate the small, dynamic conifer (only about 5' tall and 4' wide) that demonstrates some deer resistance. Found in a seedbed of Western Red Cedar at Drakes Crossing Nursery, in Silverton, Oregon. 6-12" per year 5-8 ft. Green Upright Broad Full sun -20 to -10 F
