Plant Name Description Annual Growth Ten Year Color Form Culture Hardiness
Pinus mugo
'Aurea'
A golden, semi-dwarf form of the mugo pine, with light-green needles turning bright gold in winter. 4-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Yellow Globose Full sun. -50 to -40 F
Pinus mugo
'Big Tuna'
Boldly textured, medium length needles make this sturdy, upright, multi-stemmed tree a favorite for areas in the landscape with a little more room. The slow-growing trees become taller than wide and quite bushy. Very hardy and uniquely dense, 'Big Tuna' is compact, but not dwarf. Buds turn showy during cold winter months and stand out distinctly against dark green foliage. 5-8" per year. 4-6 ft. Green Upright Broad Full sun. -50 to -40 F
Pinus mugo 'Colunaris' A very narrow, upright mugo pine, this cultivar is perfect for tight landscape spaces where a strong vertical accent is appropriate. Conspicuous buds, coated with white, waxy resin, stand out against long, dark green needles in winter, and colors intensify as the seasons change. The compact columnar habit is open enough to show off interesting reddish orange bark. Plants reliably produce small ornamental cones too. 3-6" 4-6 ft. Green Upright Narrow Full sun -50 to -40 F
Pinus mugo 'Donna's Mini' Even mature and established, this super-slow-growing, evergreen button won’t outgrow a trough or rock garden. Its green needles are very short, only 5/8 inch long, and they cover the thickly held branchlets densely, producing a dome-shaped plant with a very smooth overall texture. Discovered at Iseli Nursery, this TRUdwarf® mugo resembles a small sea urchin or pin cushion. Limited availability, rare. 1" per year 1 ft. Green Globose Full Sun -50 to -40 F
Pinus mugo
'Mops'
A gardening breakthrough, 'Mops' is a TRUdwarf® mugo pine that won't outgrow the landscape. It stays very compact and dense without shearing. This hardy, durable pine forms a low, dense mound that is excellent for use in foundation plantings, rock gardens, and in any confined area requiring a very dwarf plant. Less than 3-5" per year. 1-2 ft. Green Globose Full sun. -50 to -40 F
Pinus mugo
'Paul's Dwarf'
An extremely short needled slow growing TRUdwarf® selection; this garden gem is highly prized by bonsai and rock garden enthusiasts. A diminutive treasure, 'Paul's Dwarf' is an excellent choice to mix with other miniature plants in a rock or trough garden setting. 2-3" per year. 2-3 ft. Green Globose Full sun. -50 to -40 F
Pinus mugo
'Pot o' Gold'
Spring through summer, this lovely mounding dwarf mugo pine stays neat, tidy and compact. As fall comes to a close and winter approaches, 'Pot o' Gold' begins to glow, faintly at first then a bright lemon yellow by mid winter. The clear yellow is very strong through the season, fading back to emerald green as spring begins. 'Pot o' Gold' forms a tight, rounded mound with age, slightly larger than 'Mops' but with an added benefit of true winter radiance. A new Iseli selection. 3-5" per year. 3-4 ft. Yellow Globose Full sun. -50 to -40 F
Pinus mugo
'Sherwood Compact'
'Sherwood Compact' is a TRUdwarf® mugo pine with uniform, compact growth and refined dark green foliage. This bun-forming conifer stays very compact and dense without shearing. A desirable plant for any garden, especially those in a confined area. 3" per year. 2-3 ft. Green Globose Full sun. -50 to -40 F
Pinus mugo
'Slowmound'
'Slowmound' is a TRUdwarf® mugo pine that won't outgrow the landscape. This hardy durable pine forms a low dense mound with an informal appearance. A breakthrough for gardeners as its stays very compact and dense without shearing. Less than 3" per year. 1-2 ft. Green Globose Full Sun. -50 to -40 F
Pinus mugo 'Short Needle' Sometimes the best prize comes in the smallest package. Such is the case for this tiny, quintessential alpine conifer. An extremely slow-growing introduction from Iseli Nursery, it stands out among mugo pines for the unusually tiny needles covering very short branches. Many visible buds punctuate the foliage and contribute to the dynamic presence of this dense, slightly irregular, miniature bun. 1 to 2" >2 ft. Green Globose Full sun -50 to -40
Pinus mugo
'Tannenbaum'
Finally...a perfectly shaped, tough-as-nails dwarf pine tree for the colder, more demanding areas of the country. This living 'Christmas tree' was the one we selected as the finest among hundreds in the mugo seedling trial beds of McCrory Gardens, South Dakota State University, Brookings. We chose and named 'Tannenbaum' for its compact, pyramidal form, good winter color and of course, hardiness. The original plant measured l0-ll feet tall and 6 feet wide at the base when it was 25 years old. 6-12" per year. 5-10 ft. Green Upright Broad Full sun. -50 to -40 F
Pinus mugo
'White Bud'
This TRUdwarf® mugo pine is a reliable selection that will remain compact without the need for shearing. This makes it an excellent choice for the rock garden, entry way or border planting. 'White Bud' gets its name from the white resin that forms on the buds in late winter. 3-5" per year. 3-4 ft. Green Globose Full sun. -50 to -40 F
Pinus mugo
'Valley Cushion'
'Valley Cushion' is a TRUdwarf® mugo pine that has uniform compact growth. The medium green color of the short small needles, the mounding shape and slow growth all bring things into scale in your favorite trough or railway garden. 3-5" per year. 2-3 ft. Green Globose Full Sun. -50 to -40 F
Pinus mugo
'Teeny'
Selected especially for planting in rock-alpine gardens or troughs, this TRUdwarf® pine adds rich green color and form that will be enjoyed for years without over growing even the smallest most restrictive space. 1" per year. 10". Green Globose Full sun. -50 to -40 F
