Plant Name Description Annual Growth Ten Year Color Form Culture Hardiness
Picea abies
'Acrocona'
Aptly named, 'Acrocona' means "with terminal cones on the ends of branches." Abundant cones, even on young plants, with an added spring color featuring purple-red, immature cones. Can develop into a tree form, but the unusual coning habit tends to modify growth rate and shape to a broad pyramid. Known since about 1890, when it was found near Uppsala, Sweden, occurring spontaneously in the forest. 6-12" per year. 5-10 ft. Green Upright Broad Full Sun. -40 to -30 F
Picea abies
'Cincinata'
Lush, dense branches and long, bright green needles. Lower branches are particularly pendulous and full, creating a draping effect. 12-15" per year. 10-12 ft. Green Upright Broad Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Picea abies
'Clanbras-siliana Stricta'
'Clanbrassiliana Stricta' matures slowly into a beautifully compact, broadly pyramidal plant, the perfect dwarf Christmas tree. Named after Lord Clanbrassil of Ireland, who introduced several Picea abies cultivars during the late 18th century. 6-12" per year. 5-10 ft. Green Upright Broad Full sun. -30 to -20 F
Picea abies
'Cobra'
Each example of this new seedling selection from Iseli Nursery has its own wildly unique character that combines the ground-covering qualities of its parent, Picea abies 'Pendula', with the bizarre, snake-like branching of Picea abies 'Virgata.' When staked, trees have a relatively tall, straight, sparsely-branched main trunk and a ground-hugging, thick skirt that radiates outward with dancing, cobra-like leaders. Best planted in full sun. 12"+ Depends on culture Green Upright Broad Full sun -30 to -20 F
Picea abies
'Cupressina'
'Cupressina' has the much-desired, narrow, fastigiate form in high demand for urban and boundary plantings where a strong vertical accent is required. Tends to be moderately fast-growing, and can better withstand snow loads than many other fastigiate types. 12"+ per year. 12-15 ft. Green Upright Narrow Full sun. -30 to -20 F
Picea abies
'Elegans'
'Elegans' grows into a rounded, low, dome shape. Early bud break makes this form easily distinguishable from other similar culitvars. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Spreading Full sun -40 to -30 F
Picea abies
'Formanek'
A very prostrate form of the Norway spruce. This plant will become a densely matted spreading carpet over time. If staked up, its branches will cascade down creating a pendulous specimen. The perfect plant to creep over and around rocks. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Prostrate Full sun -40 to -30 F
Picea abies 'Frohburg' This radically prostrate, slow-growing form of Norway Spruce will become a densely matted, spreading carpet over time. If staked up, its strongly weeping branches cascade down and create a pendulous form. Unstaked, it is the perfect plant to creep over and around rocks. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Prostrate Full sun -40 to -30 F
Picea abies
'Gregoryana Parsonsii'
'Gregoryana Parsonsii' type. An irregular shape with very nice color: thickish needles, tan stems, and bright brown buds. 'Gregoryana Parsonsii' differs from 'Gregoryana' by having needles which are longer and flatter, and a slightly more open habit. Dwarfed alpine appearance; the perfect rock garden specimen. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Upright Broad Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Picea abies
'Hillside Upright'
'Hillside Upright' is possibly the darkest green-needled conifer grown by Iseli Nursery. An elegant plant, with irregular branching habit. Stylish enough for container or focal point use. 6-10" per year. 5-8 ft. Green Upright Narrow Full sun. -
Picea abies 'Jessy' A seedling selection found in 1982, 'Jessy' is a true gem for the dwarf conifer enthusiast. Abundant, itty-bitty buds accent a dense load of little needles that cover many mini-branches on this tiny plant. The original is less than 2' wide after 25 years.

Green

Globose Full sun 40 to -30 F
Picea abies 'Jogeua' The distinctive, long, narrow branches of this bright green, mounded, dwarf point up and out, which gives the compact, densely branched globe a unique look. Downward facing needles provide interesting texture too. Use this handsome plant to accent smaller landscapes. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Globose Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Picea abies
'Kellerman's Blue Cameo'
'Kellerman's Blue Cameo' exhibits a tight, slightly irregular mound form that is wider than tall. The dense grey-green needles give the stout branches a bottle brush appearance tapering toward the tips. These characteristics combine to give the plant a distinctive appearance and set it apart from other green mounding forms. 3-4" per year. 2-3 ft. Bluish Green Globose Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Picea abies 'Lanham's Beehive' The late Gary Lanham found this unusual, boldly textured, compact Norway Spruce in 1994 as a witch's broom in a mature Picea abies. Gary took it to Klein's Nursery in Louisville, KY and from there, it made its way to Iseli Nursery. The needles of 'Lanham's Beehive' are longer and thicker than other dwarf cultivars and they have a slight glaucous tint. These features, combined with prominent, cinnamon-colored stems and buds, create a dramatic effect. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Upright Broad Full sun. -30 to -20 F
Picea abies
'Little Gem'
With tiny needles and a very dense habit, this miniature version of 'Nidiformis' is simply a wonderful plant. Originating as a witch's broom on a 'Nidiformis' around 1958, it has become an extremely popular plant, useful in a variety of garden situations with its "living rock" appearance. Less than 3" per year. Less than 1.5 to 2 ft. Green Globose Full sun. -30 to -20 F
Picea abies 'Motala' A unique needle arrangement and color give this novel form of Norway Spruce a distinctive look. Blunt-tipped needles radiate out and downward on short, stout, vertical branches, which produces an Abies-like appearance. Minute, glaucous striations on needle tops complement the color with a silver-blue cast. This attractive selection, rarely found in the trade, enhances any landscape. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Globose Full sun. -30 to -20 F
Picea abies
'Mucronata'
A dark-green, compact form with large brown buds prominently displayed above its thick stiff shoots. Growing slowly in an irregular mounding habit when young, the rate of growth accelerates as the plant matures. This plant eventually develops a leader with several sub-leaders. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Upright Broad Full sun. -30 to -20 F
Picea abies
'Nidiformis'
Well-known, flat-topped, spreading spruce with dense, horizontal layers of branches; much wider than tall forming a "bird's nest" shape. A refreshing, light green color. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Spreading Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Picea abies
'Pendula'
The dark green weeping Norway spruce can be easily grown, staked, and trained into an upright specimen, or allowed to grow as an undulating groundcover, hanging over slopes and walls. For an original solution to an age-old landscape predicament, plant a row of 'Pendula' alongside a stake-and-wire support where they can be easily trained into a narrow "living fence." 12"+ per year. Varies with culture. Green Pendulous Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Picea abies
'Pendula Major'
'Pendula Major' grows into a large tree, with main branches occurring in an irregular, open manner. Its branchlets hang from the main branches, forming a curtained effect with age. 'Pendula Major', in youth, appears awkward, but with timedevelops into a beautiful, graceful tree with much character. 12+" per year.per year. 10+ ft. Green Upright Broad Full sun -50 to -40F
Picea abies
'Pumila'
Short, dark-green foliage on a very uniformly branched plant. Globose, rounded habit when young, spreading with age. All shoots uniformly pointed out or up. New growth appears later on 'Pumila' than other similar cultivars. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Globose Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Picea abies 'Pusch' A compact form of 'Acrocona,' this selection reliably produces its bright red cones at an early age. The compact form and rounded habit make it a low maitenance specimen for the garden. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Upright Broad Full sun. -30 to -20 F
Picea abies
'Pygmaea'
This is a very old selection with thin, wide-spread needles on light-colored shoots with small, terminal buds or clusters of buds. Notoriously variable, but the form is incredibly dense and slow-growing. A sculptured mound that could be considered a living rock. New growth emerges early in the spring. 3-4" per year. 2-3 ft. Green Globose Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Picea abies
'Repens'
A rich, medium green on a very uniform, spreading plant. Although very procumbent, it does build up in the center. It is easily distinguished from 'Nidiformis' by the darker color and also by the shoots which are held uniformly at about a  45 degree angle. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Spreading Full sun -40 to -30 F
Picea abies
'Rubra Spicata'
Red new growth: a very unexpected color for a spruce. For about two weeks in the spring the new growth is deep red gradually changing to red-brown then green. Typical growth habit of the species although growth rate is slightly less vigorous. 12-15" per year. 10-12 ft. Green Upright Broad Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Picea abies
'Sherwood Compact'
A narrowly pyramidal form with an ascending branching habit. Light to mid-green needles and light brown shoots. Previously listed as 'Pyramidalis', the origin and identity for this plant has long been a mystery. We now know that this is another wonderful conifer selection made by nurseryman Andy Sherwood of Oregon. 6-10" per year. 5-8 ft. Green Upright Narrow Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Picea abies 'Tompa' Fresh green needles and a compact habit make this slow-growing Norway Spruce a great choice for smaller landscapes and rock gardens. Its wide, conical shape resembles the well-known Alberta Spruce for which it is a superior alternative. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Upright Broad Full sun. -30 to -20 F
Picea abies
'Virgata'
Commonly called the snake branch spruce due to the long main branches which have few or no lateral branches. Long, dark green needles on very thick stems and branches. Bizarrely beautiful! An eyecatching lawn specimen. 12-15" per year. 10-12 ft. Green Upright Broad Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Picea abies
'Wagneri'
If we had a growth classification called micro (smaller than miniature) for conifers, 'Wagneri' would be a prime example. Slower growing than 'Little Gem'; 'Wagneri' forms a much denser, rounder globe with extremely thin, short green needles. Found at Wagner Nursery in Berkshire, Pennsylvania. 2-3" per year 1.5-2.5 ft. Green Globose Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Picea abies
'Witch's Brood'
Green gumdrop-shape dwarf. This dense, very slow-growing selection develops into a broad conical shape with age. Light-green, thin needles and light-brown stems and buds on uniform, closely arranged, slightly curved shoots. A Linc Foster "witch's broom" seedling. 3-5" per year. 3-4 ft. Green Upright Broad Full sun. -40 to -30 F
